How does second language occur? In what order does a child learn the elements?some thought on second language acquisition:It is often perceived as difficult to learn a second or other language. Adults typically do not understand the process of language acquisition. Cognitive and affective Factors enter into the process, making it complex. The order in which the elements are acquired in a second language or L2 are relatively the same as in native language acquisition (L1).The child needs lots of positive feedback, repetition, modeling and exposure to critical vocabulary in order to learn a second language. The second culture must be taught as well. Two models exist, which will affect the outcomes of second language learning. They are additive and subtractive bilingualism. Additive Bilingualism maintains the first language while second language is acquired. It provides for cognitive development in L1, while L2 develops. Students cross “the threshold” into standard academic language first in L1 and later L2Subtractive Bilingualism or Language Loss is a model where the native language is not maintained and the second language replaces the first language. The goal of subtractive bilingualism is to remove the first language and replace it with the second language. Development in the native language stops as soon as L2 development starts. Subtractive bilingualism results in limited proficiency in L1 (often in both languages).
